Jane Elia Schwartz Founder and creative director of JelliBee Baby children’s accessories
Q: What would you be doing if you weren't designing sophisticated baby accessories? A: I'd be designing interior spaces or doing urban planning. I love thinking about how people move through and use space, as well as what makes a good-looking and user-friendly space at home and in public.
Q: What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a designer? A: Tangibly building something you've only imagined is very satisfying; all sorts of real-world challenges present themselves when you bring an idea to life. Also, collaboration – taking someone's ideas and translating them into working pieces can be fun and surprising.
Q: Who or what inspires you? A: The goodness of life really inspires me. The unexpected and wonderful found in the everyday; the marrying of different materials and the idea of deliberate construction also inspires my work.
Q: What is your biggest goal or dream for the future? A: I'd love to have the JelliBee line picked up by a major high-end fashion retailer and become an internationally known and respected brand.
Q: What one piece of advice would you offer aspiring designers? A: Stay true to yourself. If you have a signature piece, theme, or style, don't be pressured into changing it too much. Certainly make note of constructive criticism or suggestions. Be open to change. But remember that you are in the creative driver's seat. Don't sacrifice your unique vision.
