Don Craig

• FOUNDER, OLD GUYS RULE

Age: 62

Status: Married to Robi Craig, with two grown children and two grandchildren

Interesting factoid: Craig considers himself a surf industry historian, and his collection includes surf memorabilia and 60 surfboards dating back to the 1930s.

How many days he played hooky this summer so that he could surf: Only a few. With today’s surf reports, Don can plan his days around incoming swells.

What’s the age that males graduate to Old Man status? Don sees men of varying ages wearing the brand with pride. Some Old Guys still skateboard in the late 30s or 40s, while a young father might be considered an Old Guy by his son or daughter.

Words to live by: “To celebrate your accomplishments, we offer up ‘Old Guys Rule’ to be worn as a badge of honor for a life well spent, but not nearly over … ”

It started with an “Old Guys Rule” bumper sticker that Don Craig, a lifelong surfer, created as a tribute to his father, who was known as one of the “Three Wise Men” at San Onofre Surf Beach. The trio used to mentor the younger surfers on life, money, love and where to sit in the lineup. The slogan unexpectedly caught fire, leading Craig – who had worked at several surf-wear giants – in 2003 to found Old Guys Rule, a San Clemente-based iconic lifestyle brand that extols the virtues of age, wisdom and experience. Craig quickly expanded the Old Guys Rule theme beyond surfing to include fishing, motor sports, golf, winter sports and more. Fueled by baby boomers who wear the brand proudly, Old Guys Rule products are now sold in more than 1,400 retail outlets in the U.S., United Kingdom and Australia.
