Mark Manguera

• CO-FOUNDER OF KOGI GROUP, KOREAN TACO FOOD TRUCK

Age: 32

Status: Single, with a 1-year-old daughter, Jaydn.

Secret passions: He’s a gear-head and Manny Pacquiao fan.

Mark’s next-favorite casual food spot: Bottega Louie in downtown L.A.

Why Mark likes his work: “No day is ever the same.”

Mark Manguera helped pioneer the use of social media to ignite a change in how we dine. One night, after clubbing with friends in L.A., Manguera – a graduate of Cal State Fullerton’s Mihaylo College of Business and Economics and the California Culinary Academy – spotted a taco truck outside the club and mused that someone should put Korean barbecue into a taco and sell it from a truck.

A business was born. With just $3,000 and the loan of a food truck, Manguera co-founded the Kogi Group with Caroline Shin and chef Roy Choi. This fusion of Korean and Mexican food has become a Southland sensation by using Twitter and Facebook to alert foodies and groupies to lunchtime and nighttime locations in Orange and Los Angeles counties. An indication of the concept’s success: Kogi has been selected by Bon Appétit as a Hot 10, listed among The Creativity 50 by Advertising Age and profiled in Newsweek, Time, The Economist, GQ, Entrepreneur, the New York Times and many other publications.
