Rob Chandler

• CEO, FAIRMONT PRIVATE SCHOOLS

Age: 55

Status: Married, with 12-year-old twins, and 26- and 29-year-old sons

Favorite class in school: Constitutional law, taught by a former attorney general of Nigeria

Career fact: “I used to drive tractors and trailers over the road wearing a starched Brooks Brothers shirt and cowboy boots.”

Dream job: “I’m one of those few people in the world who loves what he does, and it’s because I have an incredibly supportive owner and I’m surrounded by an amazing faculty and staff.”

Facing the recession – which temporarily cut into the enrollment growth of 57-year-old Fairmont Private Schools – Rob Chandler decided to think out of the box. Actually, out of the country. He spearheaded a curriculum-sharing partnership with a network of preparatory academies in China, allowing Orange County’s largest non-sectarian private school to expand internationally. China had to be impressed with the track record of Fairmont’s five O.C. campuses (P-12). Among Fairmont’s achievements: In 2010, 86 percent of Fairmont Prep’s 136 graduates were accepted into the nation’s top 100 colleges and were awarded more than $1.4 million in scholarships. Fairmont is so confident about student progress that it publishes a report card each year detailing academic milestones as well as arts and athletic achievements.

Looking to the future, Fairmont is continuing to forge educational partnerships overseas – in Vietnam and Korea – and is also pursuing opportunities in Russia and India.

This summer, Fairmont Education Group launched Thesys International, a company that partners with public, private and charter schools to offer hybrid or “blended” education programs. Thesys delivers a turnkey solution involving Web-based curriculum, a Learning Management System (LMS), teacher professional development and virtual teacher assistance.

Once his homework is done, Rob heads offshore to indulge in his passion for blue-water fishing.
