![]() Age: 66 Status: Married to his wife, Maya, with a son, Ethan, who is completing his undergraduate studies at USC Secret passion: Matkin is an avid reader of car magazines, which feed his car-watching hobby. Favorite UCI Extension class: Introduction to Wines of the World, a course that is part of a specialized Wine Studies program What he likes about his job: “This is the perfect job for someone like me who is interested in many subjects but isn’t an expert in all of them. I get involved in the early stages of project development with dedicated experts in a wide range of subjects – from business administration to zoology, and from fine-arts appraisal to java script. Once a project gets started, I turn it over to my talented staff. Later, I get to officiate at the graduation celebrations and bask in the glow of appreciation from students whose lives have been changed by our programs. Perfect.” Since becoming dean of UCI Extension in 2000, Gary W. Matkin has developed the continuing education program into a national powerhouse that boasts 30,000 annual enrollments in 2,400 courses, an offering of more than 130 instructor-led online courses per quarter, 37 certificate programs and 13 specialized studies programs. Matkin also has led the way to UC Irvine becoming a destination of choice for English-language and international programs that serve more than 3,000 students each year. This dizzying array of quality offerings resulted in Matkin being honored this year by his colleagues with the Julius M. Nolte Award, the highest honor from the University Professional and Continuing Education Association. How does Matkin view UCI Extension’s future? “As the University of California faces unprecedented challenges,” Matkin says, “University Extension is becoming critical ... as it continues to fulfill its historical roles of serving community and campus needs for new educational programs (adult and retired learners, international students) and being a leader in innovation in teaching and learning (online education, OpenCourseWare).” OCMETRO'S 2010 HOT 25 HONOREES
