Carl St.Clair
Music Director, Pacific Symphony
Age: 57
Fact: He was the first non–European to hold the position of music director and chief conductor of the German National Theater and Staatskapelle, in Weimer, Germany.
On Orange County’s artistic sensibilities: “Out of the West have come some of the most creative ideas on the planet. People in Orange County demand the best – and we aim to deliver.”
For Carl St.Clair’s sixth birthday, he expected a bike, a horse or something that little boys normally get for their big day. Instead, his mother gave him piano lessons. It was a gift that changed his life.
“Piano lessons led to a music scholarship at the University of Texas, teaching positions at Southern Illinois University and the University of Michigan, and then to Tanglewood, where I met Leonard Bernstein, one of my major influences,” St.Clair says.
Now, he is the music director of the largest orchestra created in the U.S. in the last 40 years, and he was recently appointed general music director of the Komische Oper Berlin, a well-known company in Germany.
St.Clair was named one of OC METRO’s first-ever Hot 25 honorees back in 1990, and while we celebrate the 20th list, we also are celebrating St.Clair’s 20 years with the symphony.
