Seal Beach-based DTS garners U.S. Air Force grant

Seal Beach-based Diversified Technical Systems Inc. has received an U.S. Air Force Small Business Innovation Research grant to develop a helmet jettison device that will be able to detect eject occurrences.

The $99,625 Phase I grant – which originated from the agency's Research Lab at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base – will be used to analyze current test data from air combat maneuvers and ejection sequences, build a helmet-mounted prototype that will capture real-time sensor data analysis and test the product under simulated release conditions.

DTS' team – which manufactures ruggedized data recorders and sensors – plans to customize its e-SENSING ER, or embedded recorder, platform to build the prototype that will be used to differentiate between an eject event and a regular air combat maneuver.

The system's design requires an extremely small, lightweight and low-power device that can create a signal to release a helmet-mounted display system when an eject event occurs. The product will also release goggles to prevent aircrew injuries, according to DTS.

The research grant is expected to end in December.
