In this difficult economy, where many companies are experiencing little to no growth, a small family startup is selling like, well, hotcakes. Daddy Cakes is the brainchild of two brothers, Dan Byers and Levi Silva, who loved making pancakes for their families. Before long, they began a friendly competition about who could make the best pancake recipe and in 2007, they decided to take the plunge and market their mixes. The response has been phenomenal. Daddy Cakes mixes are all vegetarian, three are 100 percent organic and six are vegan. Real fruit, whole grains and organic flour are used to create the various heart-smart flavors. All mixes are available through daddycakesbakery.com and local distribution has expanded to include major retailers throughout Southern California and many locations in Utah and Colorado. Currently, Daddy Cakes can be found locally at Whole Foods Market in Tustin and Sprouts Farmers Markets in Irvine, San Marcos and Seal Beach, Mother's Markets & Kitchen locations, Farm to Market in San Juan Capistrano, Hershey's Market on Balboa Island, Promelis Market in Costa Mesa and Newport Beach, Pacific Ranch Market in Orange, and Irvine Ranch Market in Newport Beach. “The current economic climate has forced many to watch their wallets and, as a result, many restaurants have eliminated breakfast service, so Daddy Cakes is there to fill this gap and provide an option for those staying in for meals,” says Dan Byers, co-founder and creative chef of Daddy Cakes. “We would like to think of ourselves as leading the rebirth of the American tradition known as the ‘pancake breakfast,’ which has always stood for unity and togetherness in our family.” Daddy Cakes supports various charitable organization in Orange County and Telluride, Colorado.
