Irvine-based Diedrich Coffee seeks new CEO

Move follows firm's transition to roaster, wholesaler.

Irvine-based Diedrich Coffee has begun a search for a new chief executive officer to replace Russ Phillips.

Phillips assumed the role 18 months ago to help the company transition into a well-functioning roaster and wholesaler of premium coffee brands.

Diedrich underwent a number of major steps to part from its retail and distribution operations and focus exclusively on its wholesale division. Among its actions: Diedrich sold off its Gloria Jean's domestic franchise operations for $3.1 million to Praise International in June. It retained the rights to use the Gloria Jean's name for its wholesale business.

Diedrich now markets its three brands – Diedrich, Coffee People and Gloria Jean's – through office, restaurants and specialty retailers, and the Internet. It is also one of four roasters under license to produce K-Cups for Keurig's single-cup brewing system.
