Desserts are equally innovative, with choices such as Pastel Zanahoria, a fresh-made Mexican carrot cake covered in cinnamon caramel sauce, and Enchiladas de Chocolate, two crepes stuffed with caramelized bananas and drizzled with chocolate ganache.

The cocktails are also exotic takes on traditional favorites, such as the premium Matador Bloody Mary topped with ceviche.

Matador Cantina is open seven days, with brunch on Sundays.

ALSO ON THE MENU

Antonucci’s in Mission Viejo has added live entertainment to its menu, along with happy hour Monday through Thursday in the restaurant’s new expanded lounge, and a lineup of new “lighter side” food options. Try the new tasty shrimp-and-crab ceviche with avocado and cilantro in a spicy red citrus sauce – perfect on a warm summer evening. Antonucci’s has been a South County favorite for almost a quarter of a century, serving up traditional Italian favorites and fresh seafood dishes seven days a week.

Happy b-day, Bistro K! The Bagatta family-owned Italian American restaurant in Laguna Niguel celebrated its first anniversary in May.

Bistro K – launched by seasoned restaurateurs Massi and Katia Bagatta for the purpose of expanding Katia’s flair for food, family and fun dining – is a risk that has paid off, considering the restaurant’s popularity.

“Is it the warm inviting décor reminiscent of old-town Chicago?” asks Katia. “Is it the delectable, mouth-watering tastes created by Chef Thomas Perez from a contemporary fusion of Italian-American favorites? Is it the warm welcome and playful conversation between the Bagatta family and their customers? Or is it the evening entertainment that ultimately engages the whole restaurant in random sing-alongs?”

Whatever the combination, Bistro K has struck the right balance.

Hashigo Sushi, which has restaurants in Huntington Beach, Fullerton and Costa Mesa, is now offering 50-percent-off specials during happy hour every day of the week. On the list: hot and cold sake, plum wine and Kirin beer to wet your whistle; and to satisfy your hunger, steamed edamame, spicy tuna tartare, shrimp tempura, miso shishito peppers and chicken gyoza, among many other delicious appetizers.

Hashigo Sushi is known for its creative menu items, including the Shichimi Crusted Scallop and Shrimp, pan-seared with a fennel-and-orange salad in a watermelon-cucumber soup; and Char-Grilled Atama Collar, served with traditional accompaniments and Hashigo’s house-made ponzu sauce.
