DINING REVIEW

21 Oceanfront

By Tina BorgattaPublished: December 01, 2009

A friend once asked me where she and her husband should go for a romantic dinner. They were newlyweds and celebrating their one-month anniversary or some such lovey-dovey occasion. My answer – a no-brainer – was 21 Oceanfront.

I can’t think of a more romantic place to mark a special occasion. The food is phenomenal – prime steaks (filet mignon, bone-in rib-eye, even Steak Diane grace the menu) and a selection of fresh seafood (ahi, Pacific salmon, Chilean seabass, Baja abalone and, of course, crab and lobster). And the location is almost impossible to beat: a prime corner spot in McFadden Square with a perfect view of the Newport Beach Pier and Blackie’s, a popular stretch of coast for surfers of all ages, skill and style.

The restaurant entrance faces the ocean, and it offers the first indication of the charming experience that awaits you. There’s a 19th-century ambience about this place, and you’re likely to notice it the moment you approach the restaurant. Its classic architecture and styling set the tone for what you’ll find inside – a rich, warm dining room with vintage lighting, leather-booth seating and velvet-covered chairs around the tables.
