Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar

Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar

By Tina BorgattaPublished: September 01, 2010

My husband’s not a fan of lettuce wraps, so when I told him that I wanted to try Fleming’s new Lump Crab Louis Wraps appetizer, he was less than thrilled.

“Don’t worry,” I told him. “Chef Jamie Gwen created these.”

We’re big fans of Chef Jamie, and I’ve made many of her recipes at home. He’s liked every one of them. Still, he wasn’t convinced. Until he took his first bite.

These are not your average lettuce wraps. You’ll find no iceberg on this plate. What you will find, however, are big sweet chunks of lump crab tossed with avocado, bacon, hard-boiled egg and just the right amount of mayo, with tomato and chives for good measure – all spooned into two delicate butter leaf lettuce cups. The flavors hit every sensor on my tongue. And my husband loved them, too.

Splitting the dish made for a light pre-dinner tease – just enough to satisfy those hunger pangs that always seem to strike the moment you take your seat in the dining room. But it’s ample as a light meal if you want it all for yourself.

For my entrée, I ordered the Peppercorn Steak. Typically, you’ll see this served with a rich cognac-and-cream sauce. But at Fleming’s, it’s served with a lighter but spicier signature F17 sauce. The “F” is for Fleming’s and the “17” is for the 17 different ingredients that are used to make it. Put it all together and you’ve got a hearty, savory dream of an entrée.

My husband went with a lighter choice, a special that night – halibut prepared piccata style. It was a test of sorts: He loves the halibut that’s served at a favorite neighborhood eatery, and he’s yet to find another restaurant that matches up. But again, Fleming’s exceeded expectation. The filet was thick and fluffy and moist, and the piccata sauce was light and lemony and dotted with capers. The flavors were perfectly balanced.

You could say it was a night of pleasant surprises.
