Gynecologic robotic-assisted surgery

At any given time in Orange County, you can find men, women and children engaged in all sorts of individual and team sports—swimming, cycling, soccer, surfing, basketball and many more. In fact, ‘The OC’ abounds with serious athletes, from the budding child martial arts competitor to the professional tennis player, from the weekend ‘softball’ warrior to the high-school lacrosse champion. What do all of these athletes have in common? The need for a sports medicine program that provides prompt treatment for injuries, with a successful return to the desired sport—a program that takes the athlete from injury to treatment, to rehabilitation and back again to competition or play as quickly as possible. Here at Kaiser Permanente Orange County, we have a program that does just that.
Your Good Health Is Everything
Our Sports Medicine Program cares for a large number of athletes representing many different ages and many different sports disciplines. It is a finely tuned process with an associated highly competitive, accredited fellowship program and a specialized physical therapy/rehabilitation service.
The Kaiser Permanente Orange County Sports Medicine Program is staffed by orthopedic sub-specialists (surgeons), fellows, physician assistants, orthopedic techs, physical therapists and others. Areas of sub-specialty expertise include hand, knee, shoulder, elbow, foot/ankle, pediatrics and trauma, with the most common sport injuries falling into the knee and shoulder categories. Advanced, cutting-edge sports medicine technologies and techniques are employed at all times, in particular when surgical care is required.
The program features multidisciplinary, comprehensive care that treats the whole patient, from head to toe. One of the unique facets of the Kaiser Permanente Orange County Orthopedic Program is an innovative tool called the ‘Bone Phone,’ which helps put serious athletes on the fast track. With the ‘Bone Phone,’ the orthopedic sub-specialist consults with the initial-treating physician and the patient, asking key identifying questions and reviewing x-rays online to ascertain if the injury requires surgical intervention—all while the injured athlete is being seen in urgent care, the emergency department or in the primary care physician’s office. In many cases, the sports injury itself provides specific clues, which if identified early, assist with timely and appropriate care and recovery.
Health Moves Us
Our sports medicine surgeons and fellows also give back to the community in a big way that allows them to help others, while continuing to learn and hone their skills and expertise. They are committed to our local high school and college athletes and athletic programs. Some are team physicians for the University of California, Irvine, and others can be found on the sidelines of local high school games, ready and able to provide immediate assistance and consultation when injury occurs. Others volunteer their time and sports medicine expertise as race physicians at events such as 5K walk/runs and at half and full marathons. In addition, these same surgeons are also involved in clinical, orthopedic research.

To promote a serene, healing environment, the tower will feature leading design and safety principles – the most advanced of any children’s hospital; private rooms; and enhanced family amenities. The tower will also include new pediatric surgical suites, an emergency department, as well as radiology, pathology, imaging and laboratory services. CHOC recently received a $30 million gift in support of the Change CHOC, Change the World campaign from the estate of Robert L. Tidwell. This transformational gift places CHOC two-thirds of the way towards its goal of raising $125 million. While the extraordinary gift is significant, CHOC still has $39 million remaining to reach its campaign goal by June 30, 2013.

In the broad spectrum of cancer, gynecologic malignancies are among the most feared. For good reason.
This group of cancers, including ovarian, uterine, cervical, vaginal, vulvar and endometrial, account for more than 76,000 cancers among women every year, with nearly 28,000 losing their lives.
However, these days there is reason for optimism, thanks in part to the Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center at University of California, Irvine Medical Center. One of 40 centers designated by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) as a “comprehensive cancer center”—and the only one in Orange County—the cancer center’s nationally recognized gynecologic oncology program is giving hope to women. For nine years, U.S. News & World Report has named UC Irvine Medical Center one of “America’s Best Hospitals” for its gynecology services.
A multidisciplinary approach
Key to its success is the cancer center’s multidisciplinary approach to diagnosing and treating gynecologic cancers. “This is particularly true for ovarian cancer, the deadliest of all gynecologic cancers,” says Dr. Robert Bristow, director of the Division of Gynecologic Oncology and an internationally recognized expert in ovarian cancer surgery and treatment. “The foundation of our clinical program is the holistic approach to caring for the entire person, not just the disease we are fighting, utilizing an integrated team that includes medical and nursing specialists.” Research has shown that women with ovarian cancer who undergo surgery by an experienced surgeon and receive cutting-edge chemotherapy survive two to three times longer than women who are not treated by an expert team. “This is the main reason that a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach is so critical,” says Bristow.
The clinical care program at UC Irvine Healthcare is augmented by an enthusiastic collaboration among all specialties in both basic science and medical research that includes groundbreaking clinical trials, often resulting in access to treatments before they are available elsewhere.
A new era of robotics
The cornerstone of the cancer center’s robotic surgery program is the revolutionary da Vinci Surgical System®, which is used extensively by Bristow and his colleagues, gynecologic oncologists Dr. Krishnansu Tewari and Dr. Leslie Randall. The UC Irvine team performs a broad array of advanced procedures with the robot and other technology, including complex laparoscopic surgery, radical pelvic operations, and fertility-preserving procedures.
“Robotic surgery has really revolutionized how we are able to take care of patients,” Tewari said. “It enables us to safely treat those who have much more complicated disease.” The da Vinci robot is used to perform minimally invasive radical hysterectomies — complete removal of the uterus, cervix, upper vagina and parametrium, the supravaginal portion of the cervix—for cervical cancer patients, endometrial cancer hysterectomies and lymph node dissections.
Tewari also has special expertise in performing single-incision laparoscopic hysterectomies, providing the best cosmetic outcome possible. A leading expert on cancer and pregnancy, Tewari performs fertility-sparing therapy – including surgery – on women with cervical, uterine, or ovarian cancer.

For good reason. This group of cancers, including ovarian, uterine, cervical, vaginal, vulvar and endometrial, account for more than 76,000 cancers among women every year, with nearly 28,000 losing their lives.
