We all know early detection plays a significant role in treating breast cancer, and that’s why we have encouraged our female members to make sure to get their mammograms. Last year, over 42,500 our female members received mammograms – over 90% of all eligible. In fact, we had the highest breast cancer screening rates within the Kaiser Permanente system. “We are very excited about these results,” said Judy White, medical group administrator for Kaiser Permanente Orange County. “Having screening rates that are among the very best in the nation means we are saving more of our member’s lives through prevention, early diagnosis and treatment.” Kaiser Permanente Orange County has over 403,000 members and is made up of two medical centers located in Anaheim and Irvine, along with 19 medical offices spread across the County. St. Joseph’s Hospital 1100 West Stewart Drive Orange • 714.633.9111 • sjo.org St. Joseph Hospital in Orange has performed a breakthrough procedure that combines the removal of a patient’s breast tumor with the power of electron beam radiation in the operating room. This procedure, known as intraoperative radiation therapy (IORT), was delivered with the FDA-approved device, the Mobetron. By harnessing the power of Mobetron’s® therapeutic electron beam during surgery, doctors can decrease the number of radiation treatments a patient would typically undergo following surgery. “Our hope with this new technology is to reduce the breast cancer patient’s overall treatment time while improving the outcome,” said Jay K. Harness, M.D., a breast cancer surgeon at St. Joseph Hospital and a former president of the American Society of Breast Surgeons. “I am excited about the future of this technology as we begin to expand its use in breast cancer patients as well as other cancers in the future.” AESTHETICS/COSMETIC SURGERY Orange County Urogynecology Aram Bonni MD, FACS, FACOG • Ladera Ranch 600 Corporate Drive, Suite 100 • Laguna Hills 23961 Calle de la Magdalena, Suite 420 949.916.2100 Aram Bonni, MD is Board certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Thomson Reuters’ annual study — 100 Top Hospitals: Cardiovascular Benchmarks — examined the performance of 971 hospitals by analyzing clinical outcomes for patients diagnosed with heart failure and heart attacks and for those who received coronary bypass surgery or percutaneous cardiovascular interventions (PCI) such as angioplasties. Thomson Reuters scored hospitals in key performance areas including: risk-adjusted medical mortality, risk-adjusted surgical mortality, risk-adjusted complications, core measures score, percentage of coronary bypass patients with internal mammary artery use, procedure volume, severity-adjusted average length of stay, and wage- and severity-adjusted average cost. Winners, such as Hoag Hospital, showed: • A full 12 percent lower cost in treating cardiovascular patients while providing higher quality care. • Significantly lower 30-day mortality rates than peer hospitals. • Significantly lower readmission rates within 30 days for patients with heart failure and heart attacks, and the same rate of readmissions for open-heart surgery. • Better clinical efficiency, with patients returning to daily life an average two-thirds of a day earlier than in peer hospitals. “This is a great honor achieved by the hard work and dedication of not only Hoag Heart and Vascular Institute’s physicians and nurses but Hoag Hospital’s entire staff,” commented Richard Afable, M.D., president and CEO of Hoag Hospital. “We continue to surpass national benchmarks and provide our patients with the highest possible level of care.” The study, in its 11th year, found that the 100 Top Hospitals cardiovascular winners have: • 17 percent lower mortality rates for heart attack patients. • 10 percent lower mortality rates for heart failure patients. • 27 percent lower mortality for bypass surgery patients. • 22 percent lower mortality following PCI. • Fewer post-operative complications — 99 percent of patients were complication-free. • Close to 12 percent shorter average hospital stay. Since 1987, Hoag Heart and Vascular Institute (HHVI) has been a pioneer in providing progressive cardiovascular care. As one of the preeminent cardiovascular centers on the West Coast, HHVI has continued to advance and remain the highest volume cardiovascular program in Orange County. Its extraordinary team of world-renowned physicians and staff leads the way by delivering the highest level of care, leadership and technology to its patients 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. HHVI currently has 56 cardiologists and cardiovascular surgeons on staff, and provides a broad scope of cardiac programs with the latest in diagnostic, interventional, surgical and rehabilitative services for managing and preserving cardiovascular health. With angioplasty and cardiac stent placement services available 24/7, and response times from the ER to the cardiac cath lab that are nearly 20 percent faster than the national average, Hoag is a proven leader in emergency heart care. Hoag Heart and Vascular Institute offers the latest in cardiovascular medicine with advanced and pioneering surgical techniques including minimally invasive heart surgery, ablation for treatment of arrhythmias, and coronary artery bypass surgery with endoscopic vein harvesting. Additionally, as the first dedicated heart and valve center on the West coast, Hoag’s valve surgery program is internationally recognized for expertise in complex valve surgery and mitral valve repair. As Orange County’s highest-volume cardiovascular program, Hoag Heart and Vascular Institute performs nearly 400 surgeries each year. On a yearly basis, the cardiovascular surgical team at Hoag Heart Valve Center repairs more heart valves than any other medical center in Orange County. As the field of cardiology continues to transform, Hoag Heart and Vascular Institute will continue to be at the forefront of its evolution. “Without a doubt, cardiology in the next 20 years will be transformed in ways we cannot imagine today, just as they have over the last 20 years,” commented Robert Tancredi, M.D., F.A.C.C., executive medical director of Hoag Heart and Vascular Institute. “As this transformation happens, and new technologies and innovations surface, the team at Hoag Heart and Vascular Institute will continue to provide cutting-edge, specialized medical care and the ability to respond urgently to a patient’s needs through our Newport Beach facility and through our expansion to Hoag Hospital Irvine. • KAISER PERMANENTE ORANGE COUNTY — A LEADER IN WOMEN’S HEALTH SERVICES Providing exceptional healthcare for women requires a special touch—caring and compassion combined with medical expertise and a personal approach. There are reasons: most cancer patients are either over 40 years old, or they are pre-teens. The most common cancers in those age groups are rarely seen in young adults, and research and therapies generally focus on cancers found in larger populations. Additionally, clinical trials often are tailored for older people, and the shortage of trials focusing on younger patients restrains the development of new therapies. Fortunately, things are changing, thanks to University of California, Irvine’s Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center and its Young Adult Cancer Program. The program, one of a handful in the U.S., has emerged as a beacon, led by Dr. Leonard Sender, medical director of clinical oncology services at the cancer center. “These people are experiencing a very special time in their lives,” said Sender, a vocal advocate for young adult cancer patients. “It’s a time when they’re extremely vulnerable and making many important life decisions. Along comes cancer to interrupt everything.” UC Irvine Medical Center, home to one of only 40 National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer centers in the U.S. and the only one in Orange County, offers medical and psychosocial services for patients with young adult cancers. Nationwide, every year about 70,000 people under the age of 40 are diagnosed with malignancies that include blood cancers (leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma), sarcomas, genital tract cancers (cervical, ovarian, uterine and testicular), melanoma, and thyroid cancer. “Adolescents and young adults have cancers that often are different than those facing other age groups,” Sender said. “Because of their station in life, they don’t always have peer and family support nearby, they don’t have the infrastructure needed to cure them, they may not be financially secure, and many don’t have health insurance. How they look is also very important to them, adding to the upheaval.” A spectrum of services is provided by UC Irvine Healthcare medical and surgical oncologists, radiation oncologists, plastic surgeons, dermatologists, epidemiologists, nurse specialists, social workers and others. These include: • Clinical care. Cutting-edge diagnosis and treatment are provided by fellowship-trained specialist physicians and surgeons. • Clinical trials. Patients may be enrolled in studies for breakthrough treatments not available at other hospitals. • Education. The cancer center hosts numerous educational events for community physicians and patients, all designed to raise awareness and improve medical and psychosocial outcomes. • Fertility counseling. Cancer treatment impacting fertility can be tailored or delayed to help preserve fertility, and counseling is provided about other options. • Psychological counseling. Emotional and physical healing go hand in hand, particularly for young adults grappling with issues of body image, dating, marriage, cancer recurrence and planning for the future. • Social services. Assistance with support services is important to achieving optimal outcomes. “Our program focuses on the medical aspects of cancer in adolescents and young adults, tries to understand the uniqueness of patients in their cycle of life, then provides care specialized to achieve the best possible outcomes—holistically,” Sender said. “We are treating cancers in the context of everything else going on in their lives.” Sender is an investigator in the National Physicians’ Cooperative, which is part of the Oncofertility Consortium led by Northwestern University in Chicago. It is working to improve ovary preservation, egg harvesting, sperm banking and psychological assistance for young adult cancer patients. UC Irvine’s Young Adult Cancer Program also is working with the Lance Armstrong Foundation to help researchers identify the differences between melanomas that occur in younger versus older patients. Further, the foundation is helping to identify clinical trials in which adolescents and young adults may participate. “This program can lead the country,” Sender said. “We want to be the predominant center in Southern California, improving care and outcomes for our unique body of patients. What we are doing is very, very important for Orange County.” By focusing on often-overlooked young adult cancers, UC Irvine is helping patients achieve “meaningful survivorship” while providing an important societal benefit. “Saving people at a young age preserves their most productive and enjoyable years,” Sender said. “The future of society is based upon its youth. If we can preserve the lives of young people, then we’ve helped them individually and society as a whole.” For more information about UC Irvine’s Young Adult Cancer Program, visit www.ucihealth.com/youngadultcancer or call 877.UCI.DOCS. |
