Hospitals & Other Healthcare Providers

 Published: February 01, 2013

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, with one in every three deaths attributed to heart disease and stroke. During Heart Awareness Month, Hoag promotes heart health awareness with a host of information and services available to encourage heart-healthy lifestyle changes.

Get Screened
Hoag offers a variety of state-of-the-art screenings that help identify early signs of heart disease. Hoag is currently offering the following special screenings for eligible seniors:

Valve Screening: Seniors 65 and Older
Through a generous grant from Edwards Lifesciences, Orange County seniors may qualify to receive a heart valve screening at no cost. Seniors who have not had previous heart valve surgery, or have been diagnosed with heart valve disease may be eligible. For more information, call 949.764.VALVE (8258).

“Welcome to Medicare” Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) Screening
Medicare covers this one-time screening ultrasound if you receive a referral at your “Welcome to Medicare” preventive visit. You must get the preventive visit and the screening ultrasound referral (not the ultrasound exam itself) within the first 12 months you have Medicare Part B.
Those eligible must:
> Have a family history of abdominal aortic aneurysm
> Be male, age 65-75 who has smoked at least 100 cigarettes in his lifetime
> Have never had an AAA ultrasound screening paid for by Medicare

A physician referral is required for the AAA ultrasound screening to bring to your “Welcome to Medicare” preventive visit. To schedule an appointment, call 866.473.5605.

Get Educated
Start your heart healthy journey with a free education class this February, presented by a Hoag Cardiologist. Class topics include: What are the Signs of Early Valve Disease, How to Prevent a Heart Attack, and Women and Heart Disease. For more information, visit Hoag.org/winter-classes or call 800.400.HOAG (4624).

Make Healthy Meal Choices
Hoag is proud to collaborate with Subway to offer a special “Hoag Heart Month Deal” at participating locations* throughout Orange County. In February and March, anyone who purchases a 6 inch sub sandwich or larger can ask for the “Hoag Heart Month Deal” and receive a complimentary beverage. The Hoag Deal is valid from February 1 - March 31, 2013 at more than 90 participating locations. *For a complete list of locations, visit hoag.org/heart.

Get Connected
During Heart Month, take the opportunity to connect with your health care provider to receive an annual check-up, and outline the ways in which you could improve your heart health.

There’s no place like CHOC.  Not in California or anywhere else in the nation.  When the doors of their state-of-the-art patient care tower open in 2013, CHOC Children’s will be one of the safest, most advanced children’s hospitals in the world.
The tower will house new and advanced pediatric services, and meet capacity needs for future generations.  A new emergency department, operating rooms, laboratory, and imaging services will each have a dedicated pediatric environment and staff. Enhanced family amenities will create a serene, healing environment for children and their families.

One of the safest hospitals in the nation
The first children’s hospital in the world to borrow innovative concepts from the aerospace, aviation and manufacturing industries, CHOC’s new tower will feature standardized processes and design elements that will help the team perform vital functions flawlessly:

> “Same-handed” rooms – Each patient room will be identical, with supplies and equipment located in exactly the same places. “Same-handed” rooms require more space and are more expensive to build.  However, standardizing these rooms reduces error because physicians, nurses and other staff members are already oriented to the room.
> Private patient rooms – Private rooms reduce the spread of infection and allow the hospital care team to focus more intently on individual patient needs.  Private rooms can also be better controlled for individual noise, lighting and atmosphere preferences, helping to give patients and their families a place to call their own while staying at CHOC.
> Built-in nursing alcoves – Located directly outside the patients’ rooms, these workspaces allow nurses to keep patients within eyeshot.  Advanced wireless communications and healthcare information technology will keep critical patient information immediately accessible.

These elements – and so much more – will take patient safety at CHOC to an even higher level.

Recruiting and retaining top pediatric talent
CHOC’s new tower is an important component in the recruitment and retention of top pediatric experts from throughout the world.  It’s the final piece of a comprehensive package that offers experienced, compassionate physician and hospital staff dedicated to the relentless pursuit of pediatric medical excellence; leading-edge patient safety and health information technology; research and academic opportunities through CHOC’s affiliation with UC Irvine; and professional opportunities that only a full-service, nationally recognized children’s hospital can provide.

Support CHOC
To learn more about CHOC’s passionate pursuit to provide the safest, most advanced care for children – and how you can support it - visit www.choc.org/giving. Or, call the CHOC Children’s Foundation at 714.532.8690.

After receiving inpatient care, most cardiac patients continue their treatment with the cardiac rehabilitation program for lifestyle modification and cardiovascular education.
Saddleback Memorial is recognized for quality outcomes and received The American Heart Association and American Stroke Association 2011 Get With The Guidelines Gold Award for Heart Failure, achieving at least two years of 85% or higher adherence to all program quality indictors.

Q&A on the future of health care in Orange County
Deborah Proctor, President & CEO,
St. Joseph Health

In 1912, the Sisters of St. Joseph traveled across the country to open a school and eventually a small hospital in Eureka, Calif.  From these humble beginnings, St. Joseph Health, based in Orange, Calif., is now a $4.6 billion, 14-hospital system serving California, Texas and New Mexico – including four outstanding hospitals in Orange County. Deborah Proctor, one of the Top 25 Women in US Health Care according to Modern Healthcare magazine, began her career as a nurse at St. Joseph Hospital more than 30 years ago and now serves as the organization’s president and CEO.

Question: Given the changing health care landscape, how is your health system transforming?
Deborah Proctor: We began making changes long before health care reform became law by embracing an illness and wellness model to foster broad networks of care – not just hospitals for treating the ill or injured – that includes a more integrated continuum of services for the community. We changed our name in May to St. Joseph Health in California and Covenant Health in Texas and these new names embrace the spirit of our new networks of care.

Q: What obstacles will hospitals and providers face going forward?
DP: We understand that families and employers are struggling and we are extremely concerned about the accessibility and affordability of health care. Health care reform will enable people in our communities to get the services they need. Our goal is to ensure our hospitals and providers are accessible while maintaining quality of care, becoming both the value and quality leader in our communities.

Q: What makes the care provided by St. Joseph Health unique?
DP: At St. Joseph Health and Covenant Health, we are committed to our core mission outcomes of Sacred Encounters, Perfect Care and Healthiest Communities. In pursuing Perfect Care, we will seek out best practices, tightly monitor our outcomes and complete the system-wide implementation of the electronic medical record that greatly reduces clinical error. These changes will result in better, safer delivery of services. As for building the Healthiest Communities, we will sharpen our focus on health management and prevention. In addition, we will deepen the truly special element that differentiates the St. Joseph Health and Covenant Health experience, which refers to our unified, uncompromising efforts across our health care networks to make every interaction a Sacred Encounter.

Q: How will the hospitals in Orange County help fulfill this mission?
DP: With four outstanding hospitals and excellent physician partners serving Orange County, we are the preeminent provider of health services in the region. St. Jude Medical Center in Fullerton, Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo and Laguna Beach, and St. Joseph Hospital in Orange are among the state’s most respected and technologically advanced, offering care in multiple specialties including cancer, heart, orthopedics and women’s services. Our more than 10,000 dedicated employees strive daily to provide Perfect Care, build the Healthiest Communities and ensure every encounter is sacred.
