2010 Aston Martin DBS

I don’t know about you, but the thought of spending $274,350 on any new automobile makes me dizzy. A quarter of a million bucks for a new car? There, I’m dizzy again.

That’s not to say that if a ton of money fell into my lap I wouldn’t blow it on an automobile. Just not a new one. Don’t tell my boss, but nearly every day I discreetly type ebaymotors.com into my computer and scroll to the bottom of the list of brands, then click on the Other Makes category.

Organized by oldest first, it’s the realm of my automotive dreams: ’34 Chrysler Airflows, ’36 Cords, ’41 Lincolns. Enough to make my index finger twitch like a rattler’s tail above my mouse’s left click button. And, come to think of it, I could easily buy all three of those cars for $274,350.

That’s also the price of a brand-new Aston Martin DBS, the British sports-car maker’s ultimate offering to date. Sure, for a quarter-mil you get some amazing stuff, such as a 510 horsepower 5.9-liter V12 engine; 20-inch rear wheels wrapped with 11.6-inch 30-series tires; carbon-ceramic brakes; a hood, front fenders and trunk lid composed of carbon fiber (the rest is aluminum); shock absorbers that are cat-quick adaptive; and looks so attention-grabbing, Paris Hilton could drive one incognito.

But $274,350?
