El Pollo Loco's third quarter results, continued ...

Same-store sales for the system, which include both company-operated and franchise locations, fell 10.1 percent.

El Pollo Loco also reported a $5 million net loss in the period, compared to a net income of $48,000 in the third quarter of 2008.

Carley says that the company's efforts to build traffic and average check through promotions and campaigns during the quarter were not as successful as it had hoped. Furthermore, they illustrate the effects of the economy on consumer spending.

"Our entire system is focused on turning this difficult time into a defining chapter for our brand by aligning our employees, franchisees and business partners around a brand optimization platform that leverages our grilling expertise, focuses on exceeding our guests' expectations and offers promotions that resonate with consumers seeking fresh, healthful, tasty food," says Carley of the coming months.
 
El Pollo Loco currently runs a system of 171 company-operated and 244 franchised restaurants throughout the U.S.
