ENC, Borrego Solar present new series

Newport Beach's Environmental Nature Center is teaching Orange County about the benefits of solar energy.

The Environmental Nature Center, headquartered in Newport Beach, and Borrego Solar, which has local offices in Santa Ana, are presenting a new series dedicated to solar photovoltaics, or the use of solar cells by converting sunlight directly into electricity, starting Jan. 21.

After taking on an expansive green renovation, The Environmental Nature Center was awarded a LEED Platinum certification from the U.S. Green Building Council in December, making it the first LEED Platinum building in Orange County. The nonprofit organization's programs are dedicated to providing an education, hands-on experience with nature.

Working with Borrego Solar, the Environmental Nature Center has created a curriculum designed to stress the benefits of solar energy. The first class, Solar 101, covers the history of energy sources and solar photovoltaics from the 1960's to now; the benefits of solar and its impact on the environment; how the technology works; a breakdown of solar incentives available today such as federal tax credits and state rebates; and a walk-through of what happens once solar is incorporated into the property.

Solar 101 does not require any previous knowledge about solar energy, though the center and Borrego will be hosting more focused courses on involvement in the industry down the road.

The classes begin on Jan. 21 at the Environmental Nature Center at 7 p.m. at 1601 16th St. in Newport Beach.
