Fashion Island debuts luxury movie theater
The new Island Cinemas opens this weekend, featuring a wine bar, dining options and other amenities

The new Island Cinema at Fashion Island opens today in Newport Beach, offering locals a more refined movie-going experience. The newly remodeled and redesigned cinema replaces the old Edwards theater, which closed in January to make way for the remodel. The Irvine Co., which owns Fashion Island and the theater, has contracted the Regal Entertainment Group to manage the new cinema.
The seven-screen theater has been remodeled with a more spacious lobby in the Italianate style, reflecting the overall architectural themes of the shopping destination. The lobby will also feature upscale dining options, including paninis, spring rolls, quiches, pastries and McConnell’s ice cream. Beverage options include wine, beer and champagne.
The theater auditoriums themselves have also been remodeled, and are now laid out with stadium seating. Seating capacity has also been reduced to accommodate new, oversized armchair-style leather seats with extra-wide armrests, wider aisles and more comfortable legroom. According to Fashion Island reps, reserved seating will be available for movie showings, allowing patrons to choose their seats for the movie, much like at plays or athletic events.
The theaters have been updated with state-of-the-art Sony 4K projection systems, which Fashion Island reps say offers resolution four times higher and more vivid than a high-definition TV. Four auditoriums are also equipped with RealD 3-D projection technology.
“We are excited to unveil a truly spectacular theater complex for the holiday movie season,” said Dan Sheridan, president of Irvine Company Retail Properties. “We are dedicated to providing the best possible experience for shopping, dining and entertainment, and this beautiful new theater will be the perfect addition to Fashion Island for locals and visitors alike.”
The cinemas will make their public debut this weekend, following two preview charitable events earlier in the week. On Wednesday, the Island Cinemas hosted a special screening of “Young Adult,” starring Charlize Theron, benefiting the Newport Beach Film Festival held every spring; and on Thursday, the ocean conservation nonprofit organization Oceana co-hosted an “Evening at the Cinema” event with cocktails, restaurant tastings from Fashion Island restaurants and a pre-release screening of “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows,” with Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law.
