![]() Once a three-attorney firm 25 years ago, Orange County-based Hollins•Schechter has grown to encompass more than 30 lawyers, plus an aggressive, snap-action team of paralegals and law clerks who provide uncompromising services out of four offices in Orange County, Los Angeles, San Diego and the Inland Empire. Additionally, Hollins•Schechter attorneys take pride in their successful pretrial motions that reduce and eliminate client risk exposure. But the firm’s hallmark is trial practice. Areas include business litigation, employment law and litigation, catastrophic injury, community association law, creditors’ rights, construction litigation, professional liability, environmental law and litigation, intellectual property, class action litigation and numerous other legal services. Further, because the firm has such diversified talent, Andrew S. Hollins, one of the founding partners at Hollins•Schechter, said he is sometimes amused when large practices bring in five lawyers on a matter. In 2005, Hollins was elected Trial Lawyer of the Year by the Orange County Chapter of the American Board of Trial Lawyers (ABOTA), a prestigious organization that invites less than one-half of 1 percent of trial attorneys to join. “The only difference between Hollins•Schechter and the mega firms are that the mega firms charge a couple of hundred dollars an hour more and have about 500 less trials than us,” said Hollins, who brings more than 32 years of experience to the table. “We’re the lawyers who get called by other lawyers to try the case for their clients.” Managing Principal Kathleen Mary Kushi Carter is described as an expert in litigation management by partners, associates and clients who admire her ability to deliver iron-clad arguments. Right now, Carter – who formerly operated her own law practice – said her biggest challenge is in employment law, where there has been a significant increase in economy-driven employee claims. Because Hollins•Schechter is a smaller, regional firm, Carter believes the team is able to offer more trial experience at lower fees than the big firms. “I like the employment cases and typically represent the corporate side,” Carter said. “To me, they are factually more interesting but are really tough on employers who usually always start off at a disadvantage.” Principal partner Bruce Lee Schechter also brings more than 30 years of litigation success to the courtroom, handling defense cases ranging from wrongful death suits to product liability and personal injury claims. “My expertise is where there are substantial medical issues and injuries, which require a lot of medical terminology,” Schechter said. “I’ve tried 12 RSDS (Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Syndrome) cases – and I’m sure no one in the country has even gotten close to that number, all resulting in favor of the client.” Further, Schechter has a heart for teaching, and as an Adjunct Professor of Law at Chapman University in Orange, often presents the topic “How to Litigate a Civil Case From Inception to Verdict,” frequently using students from his classes to help litigate authentic courtroom trials. “I was once told by one of my professors that the journey of law is a never-ending journey,” Schechter said. “I believe teaching is one way of giving back while improving the system through knowledge and education.” THE FEATURED LAWYERS:
