Larry A. Walraven

Watching Out for the Workplace

In today’s economic climate, no area of law is more relevant than employment law. Larry Walraven and his colleagues help steer businesses through the complex web of laws affecting employers. With 20 years of experience, he helps employers with a myriad of issues, including:

   • Avoiding and defending discrimination lawsuits
   • Compliance with detailed and sometimes arcane wage and hour laws
   • Protection of trade secrets
   • Administration of employee benefit plans in compliance with the federal law

“I chose a career in law because I thought I could help individuals and businesses navigate our country’s legal system,” Walraven said. “I saw firsthand in the late 1970s and early 1980s how labor and employment law could affect families and businesses. I wanted to be part of the solution by becoming a lawyer.”

A big part of Walraven’s practice involves helping companies avoid problems before they arise. He is active in counseling and training sessions to keep clients apprised of the law. He also frequently assists employers that face union organizing efforts or contract negotiations.

Walraven obtained his law degree from the University of Texas in 1989 and moved to California, where he joined O’Melveny & Myers. He left to open his own firm in 2006.

“Large firms were moving away from assisting employers with their day-to-day issues and focusing mainly on large class-action litigation,” Walraven said. “I still do class-action cases but wanted to maintain my close daily working relationship with my clients.”

Recognized as one of the top labor and employment lawyers in Southern California, Walraven represents employers ranging from small startups to Fortune 500 companies. Some of his most notable cases involve defending high-profile clients in lawsuits over employee benefits. Such clients include a national television network, The Motion Picture Industry Pension Plan and one of the nation’s largest health insurance companies.
