Robert Gerard

An Extreme Lawyer for Extreme Sports

Robert Gerard has a job most would envy: combining his love of sports and travel with a legal practice dealing with extreme sports athletes and their sponsors. A partner with Friedman Stroffe & Gerard, a full-service law firm where he heads the Employment & Labor Group, he often refers to himself as “the luckiest lawyer on the planet.” Gerard also co-chairs the firm’s Sports Law Practice Group with Partner Bryan Friedman. Both grew up hardcore “surf rats.” (Friedman worked in the surf industry, and Gerard was a long time San Clemente ocean lifeguard supervisor.) So it’s no surprise that they have many ocean and surf-related clients.

Longtime client Brodie Carr, CEO of the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP), has nothing but praise for Gerard. “In addition to being our U.S. legal counsel and handling our athlete discipline issues, Robert is a guy who can move easily amongst all the constituencies involved in professional surfing: sports governing bodies; surf industry executives; contest judges; the medical team; athletes; lawyers; and sports agents. Honestly, I don’t know what we would do without him.”

Gerard has been a lawyer more than 20 years, served as president of the Orange County Bar Association, and been a winner of the Top Gun trial lawyer competition. He has also served as chairman of the board of directors for SurfAid International, USA, and currently serves on the Balboa Bay Club Board of Governors.

Besides logging in thousands of frequent flyer miles for his sports clients, Gerard also works with a variety of business clients in his management-side employment and labor practice. They include builders, architects, banks, developers, health care companies, title insurers and even ski and snowboard resorts. Many executives from his non-surf industry clients are also avid surfers, which makes for a strong common bond when dealing with “landlocked” legal issues.
