The second annual “Fore a Cure” golf tournament was held Nov. 10 at the Coto de Caza Golf & Racquet Club to raise money for better treatments and a cure for cystinosis through Natalie's Wish.org. Cystinosis is a rare genetic metabolic disorder that afflicts 500 children and young adults in the U.S. and about 2,000 worldwide.

Funds were raised through individual and corporate sponsorships, donations and auctions; 144 golfers participated in the tournament.

Since 2003, CRF has funded 45 research studies and fellowships totaling more than $6.9 million.

“We are grateful to our sponsors and participants for their generous support of the CRF and Natalie’s Wish,” says Vince Ciavarella, event chairman. “The money will fund vital cystinosis research for new treatments and a cure.”

Those afflicted with Cystinosis cannot transport the amino acid cystine from their cells. The gradual accumulation results in the development of crystals, which cause early cell death. Eventually every organ in the body is destroyed. Medication can prolong children’s lives, but there is no cure. It’s rare for cystinosis sufferers to reach the age of 40.
