Give thanks at Village of Hope

The Cheesecake Factory will host the first Thanksgiving feast at the state-of-the art homeless facility in Tustin.

By Susan BelknappPublished: November 21, 2008

The Village of Hope had its grand opening in September 2008 to welcome disadvantaged homeless and hungry people from throughout Orange County. This Thursday will be the first Thanksgiving dinner and the organization expects to feed more than 350 people.

The feast will be held at the 4,400 square-foot kitchen, dining and service area at that was donated, designed and built by Irvine-based  The Cheesecake Factory. Cheesecake Factory chefs and volunteers will prepare the meal in the commercial kitchen and serve it to the individuals and families coming together for Thanksgiving dinner.

On any given day, the Village of Hope can serve up to 600 formerly homeless residents who are working to transition back into society.

The center functions solely on private donations and includes 192 beds, a child development center, playground, parent education center, vocational training classrooms, health care facility, donation warehouse, the kitchen and dining facility and support offices.

The site was awarded to the Orange County Rescue Mission for the Village of Hope by the City of Tustin. The land and buildings have an estimated worth of $8 million.

“Many talented and generous partners came forward to donate their services and support. HomeAid Orange County, the community outreach arm of the Building Industry Association, has been leading the Village of Hope partnership,” says Jim Palmer, president of the Orange County Rescue Mission and creator of the Village of Hope concept.

“This partnership exemplifies the generosity of many entities uniting to help homeless Orange County families. More than $7 million in engineering, construction materials, labor and services were sought by HomeAid and the Village of Hope,” adds Palmer.
