  • We are entering a new era in the production of ethanol and other alternative fuels to replace gasoline and diesel. And BlueFire Ethanol Fuels is leading the way. The Irvine-based company, named one of the top bio-energy companies in 2008-2009, has revolutionized how fuels are produced, converting organic waste paper and vegetable scraps, among other items, into ethanol that can be sold locally.

How did this idea become a reality? Company founders played with the notion that feedstock is essentially worthless. Landfill operators are required to pay $6 for every ton of trash they eliminate. BlueFire Ethanol converts that waste into ethanol, allowing the landfill operators to eliminate a significant expense and qualify for “carbon credits.” This works as a conceptual food chain, with landfill operators at the bottom, BlueFire Ethanol in the middle and consumers at the top. We’ll ultimately utilize the waste in some form, instead of leaving it in the landfills.
