![]() The eco-activists behind Ecofficiency are Jesse Baker, founder and president, and Chrissy Gray, co-founder and secretary, who also owns Green Events. The pair launched the nonprofit last July with the mission of addressing social and environmental issues through events, consultations, lectures, information sessions and classes. And this month, they launched a certification program for small businesses seeking to practice sustainability. The program will “implement, validate and market their efforts toward sustainability,” writes Baker in the course syllabus. “Criteria for the certifications have been developed for specific industries by sustainability experts with significant industry experience.”The program focuses on food service, office management and dry cleaning, and a program for print shops, beauty salons, spas, gyms and landscapers are in development. Ecofficiency’s model aims to strike a balance among factors of the economy, ecology and equity. The core concerns aim to achieve environmental justice, sustainable natural resource management, and diversity and cultural value. “Jesse has traveled the world extensively and seen the consumer impact,” Gray says. “The idea for Ecofficiency came about after I went to Nicaragua and he went to Antarctica. We knew we had to do something.” |
