Green Speed Dating
Jenean Smith’s service helps eco-minded singles meet and, at the same time, raises money for her nonprofit, Power to the People.

Jenean Smith has always been environmentally conscious. You get that just by looking at her resume: marketing communications manager for Cypress-based Mitsubishi Electric’s Solar Division; founder of Long Beach-based Power to the People, a volunteer organization that works with communities in developing countries to install solar electric systems on buildings.
So it stands to reason that any entrepreneurial efforts would reflect her environmental sensibilities. Green Speed Dating does that and more. Founded this year as a fundraising mechanism for her nonprofit, Green Speed Dating provides a venue where eco-minded singles can meet – whether you ride your bike to work or wear organic cotton; whether you’re the ultimate environmentalist or an Earth-friendly neophyte. The singles meet up once a month to mingle and meet new like-minded friends.
“There are a lot of matches at every event,” Smith says.
And all proceeds from Green Speed Dating go to Power to the People. The cost of the service is $25 per event. So far, after just three events, Smith has raised $2,000 for the nonprofit.
The service works like this: A meet-up is scheduled (the next event is Dec. 2 at Kaori Sushi in Fullerton). Each participant meets 10 to 20 people within his or her age range. They chat, one-on-one, for three minutes. Once everyone’s met, the participants choose who they’re interested in, and the service later provides them with their prospective partners’ contact information, providing everyone’s agreeable.
