“The State of Education 2010 will provide a call to action for stakeholders, including education, business, families, and community leaders, to work together to advocate for the state of California to increase local control by restructuring K-12 education finance, providing flexibility for the use of categorical funding, and eliminating mandates that are not funded by the state,” Habermehl says. The theme for this year’s even is “Education and Business: Facing Challenges, Seizing Opportunities.” Also on the roster of speakers: Ronald Bennett, president and CEO of School Services of California, who will talk about the issues facing education systems statewide; Lucy Dunn, president and CEO of the Orange County Business Council, who will talk about the connection between education and the economy; and NBC Channel 4’s Vikki Vargas, who will emcee the event. “Education affects all of us, whether we have children in school, our organization wants to hire the best and the brightest in the future, or we want to live in a safe, prosperous community,” Habermehl says.
