Laguna Beach’s Villa Rockledge, a stunning, historic, cliff side property is available for sale. The property was designed by acclaimed late-19th and early 20th century architect Arthur Benton for visionary Frank A. Miller, the owner and developer of Riverside’s Historic Mission Inn Hotel, one of the most famous resort hotels in Southern California. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, construction of the property occurred between 1918 through 1922 and includes a main house and six villas on the compound. It is situated on one of California’s last private beaches. The same owners have lovingly maintained Villa Rockledge for more than 30 years. Built on a spectacular site Miller purchased in 1887, the estate was created as a gift to his wife, Marion. (Its original name, Mariona, is carved above the entrance.) Under the careful scrutiny of Miller and Benton, the same crews and artisans who built the Mission Inn crafted every part of the residence by hand – from the thick cement foundations and retaining walls to the rustic stone towers, large open oceanside porches and ornamental chimneys. Each leaded glass casement window, heavy beam, hand-sanded mahogany floor, wrought iron railing and masterpiece timework was handmade. According to the National Parks Service report, “The interior of Rockledge nearly defied verbal description ... Miller's imagination produced an array of tasteful splendor."
