Miller and Benton filled Villa Rockledge with an array of “new”
Mediterranean and Mission influences aimed at capturing the beauty of
early California. No two rooms are alike. Encouraged by Miller, the
style would soon sweep Southern California, earning a place in
generations of hearts.
“The overall quality is complex, dynamic
and with a very pleasant sense of mystery,” says the state of
California Historic Resources Inventory. “The villa is in excellent,
well-maintained condition. One must see it from the ocean side to
really appreciate its beauty.”
Back in the early days of
Hollywood, an invitation to Villa Rockledge was a highly coveted prize.
Hollywood luminaries like Clifton Webb, Robert Mitchum and Errol Flynn
basked on its private beach. Bette Davis met her future husband there
and later married him at the Mission Inn.
The current owners
spent the past 35 years restoring every part of Villa Rockledge to its
original grandeur. In 1984, the property was added to the National
Registry of Historic Places.
“The restoration was celebrated
with a huge private party which I attended along with many leaders of
some of the nation's largest corporations and the national press,” says
Thomas S. Jones in the preface of “The History of Villa Rockledge.”
