Former Olympic skaters go for the bronze by opening a local tanning franchise

Todd Sand and Jenni Meno jump-started their Aliso Viejo salon with a grand opening this past weekend.

Two former world-class athletes best known for their success in a winter sport have entered a business most often associated with fun in the sun: a tanning salon.

Todd Sand and Jenni Meno, a husband-and-wife pairs-figure-skating team who won World silver and bronze medals, and were victorious in three U.S. Championships, on Saturday celebrated the grand opening of their new venture, a Hollywood Tans salon in Aliso Viejo.

The couple, who also reside in Aliso Viejo, hope that the same persistence, determination and grace under pressure that served them so well in athletic competition will carry over into business success.

Although Sand and Meno coach figure skaters and have been involved in a variety of investments, they decided to launch the only Hollywood Tans franchise in South Orange County in order to build their nest egg. (Another such franchise is located in Los Alamitos.)

Sand and Meno investigated the franchise – they visited several locations, including one owned by a fellow skating coach – and liked Hollywood Tans’ business practices.

“I was sold on their franchise model just by the way the other owners and the parent group ran their business,” said Sand. “It’s like a tight-knit group that is very supportive of each other and feels like family.”

At Saturday’s event, free tans were given to local first-time customers, as well as those who signed up for special opening-day memberships. The festivities also included giveaways and prizes, as well as free refreshments.
