So, how did some other local areas measure up?

Santa Ana saw a drop in the number of violent offenses reported, according to the FBI stats. There were a total of 816 incidents, down from 856 in the same period in 2008.  But, there was an uptick in murders – 18 were reported, as opposed to 14 – as well as rape. Both aggravated assault and robbery saw a decline.

Anaheim also saw a decline in violent crimes compare to 2008. There were 574 incidents reported in the first six months of this year, down from 623. The number of murders dropped to five (there were eight in '08). Rape and robbery decreased, and the number of aggravated assault offenses – 300 – remained the same.

Huntington Beach saw a drop in violent crimes, falling to 183 in the first half of this year, compared to 195 in'08. The number of murders – one – and forcible rapes – 20 – were unchanged, while robbery and aggravated assault declined.

Overall, the preliminary stats show that violent crime was down 4.4 percent nationwide, compared to the same time last year. Murder fell 10 percent, and forcible rape, robbery and aggravated assault also declined.
