Internet dating reflects racial stereotypes, says UC Irvine

Study finds white men prefer Asians, Latinas; white women seek African-American, Latino men.

Those who partake in online dating tend to observe racial stereotypes when searching for a mate, according to a recent report from UC Irvine.

Researchers analyzed profiles on Yahoo Personals of people ages 18-50 in L.A., New York, Chicago and Atlanta between September 2004 and May 2005 with some startling discoveries. Among them: White men prefer Asian and Latina women to African-American women as dating partners, and white women prefer African-American and Latino men over Asian men. And Asians, African-Americans and Latinos were more likely to include white people as possible dates than white people were to include them. This suggests that white people hold the power when it comes to interracial dating.

Negative portrayals of African-American women and Asian men on television, as well as movies and music, could contribute to those preferences, according to Cynthia Feliciano, researcher and assistant professor of sociology and Chicano/Latino studies.
