![]() BlueFire is working to construct cellulosic biorefinery production facilities that create ethanol from locally available biomass, such as urban trash, rice and wheat straws, wood waste and other agricultural residues. The firm's system effectively clears landfills while producing a viable alternative to gasoline. “Having voters rank BlueFire Ethanol among the top 20 bioenergy companies for two straight years is a testament to the credibility of our technology and our proven ability to produce ethanol from presorted municipal waste,” says BlueFire President and CEO Arnold R. Klann. The rankings were based on BioFuels Digest's award panel. They reflect a number of important announcements and developments made by the firms. Recent accomplishments that put BlueFire in the running include the completion of a 20-month licensing process that allows BlueFire to build its first commercial ethanol biorefinery plant in Lancaster. It will be the first U.S. facility of its kind for the firm. BlueFire also received the go-ahead from the Department of Energy to continue with the second part of the loan process for that plant, and it is moving forward with plans for its second refinery project in Fulton, Miss.
