Continuing its history of international exchange debate programs with China, Irvine Valley College (IVC) is holding an international debate involving universities from Beijing and Xi’an on Feb. 2.

Debate teams from Beijing Foreign Studies University and Xi’an International Studies University will compete against IVC and Saddleback College in Mission Viejo in the 11th of IVC’s series of international debates. The topic to be discussed: Is environmental protection less important during times of economic crisis?

The debate marks the fifth time IVC has hosted Chinese teams on its campus. IVC has also sent 70 students to China for debate demonstrations, study-abroad programs and debate competitions.

“We will continue our proud tradition with a debate demonstration involving U.S. and Chinese students," says Gary Rybold, the community college's director of forensics. "It should be a fine educational evening for debaters and the audience alike.”

The debate opening ceremonies begin at 7 p.m. at the IVC Performing Arts Center on Feb. 2. Admission is free, and parking can be purchased for $2 in the lot next to the Performing Arts Center.
