Irvine is among the Best Small Cities for Startups in 2009, according to a recent report from BusinessWeek. The publication and Web site sought out areas where high-growth companies could easily expand and prosper.

The list was compiled with help from San Francisco-based GIS Planning's zoomprospector.com, which provides geographic data for companies. Cities with populations between 20,000 and 200,000 were researched, with 11 factors such as the amount of workers with at least a bachelor's degree in 2008; the area's young and educated population from 2005-2007; and small business per capita in 2008.

Irvine has a population of about 190,000, a labor force of 107,366 and 59 small businesses per 1,000 people. The city also has 3.43 startups per 1,000 people.
