Irvine adopts Green Building Code

The city council approved early implementation of new state environmental regulations on Tuesday.

The Irvine City Council voted Tuesday for early adoption of California’s Green Building Code. The state adopted the code in July 2008 – the first in the nation to commit to the environmental regulations of building construction and renovation. The code will not become mandatory until Jan. 1, 2011, but Irvine plans to implement it nine months earlier, on April 1, 2010.

According to the California Building Standards Commission, Irvine is the first city in Orange County and only the second city in the state, to take voluntary action on early adoption. California adopted the Green Building Code in July 2008, becoming the first state in the nation to adopt statewide green building standards.

Although the new regulations don’t go in to effect until January 2011, the state encouraged local governments to consider early adoption of the code. The rollout period will allow ample time for cities, the building industry and suppliers to prepare for and adjust to the changes, which address all facets of building and design, including materials, construction methods, energy systems, water efficiency, landscaping and indoor air quality, to name a few.
