City of Irvine, continued ...

The Green Building Code affects only residential development at this time.

Irvine is already a leader in green building, having adopted Orange County’s first comprehensive voluntary green building program in 2006. For developers and builders wanting to exceed the minimum building code requirements, the voluntary green building programs provide a certification when certain green features are included.

Statewide, there have been more comprehensive green building certification programs developed since the original implementation of the Green Building Certification. As part of the Irvine City Council’s action on Oct. 13, the city’s voluntary green building certification program was discontinued and developers will be encouraged to use one of the more widely accepted voluntary certification programs.

This includes Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) and Build It Green’s GreenPoint Rated (GPR) programs. There are currently 10 LEED certified buildings in Irvine, and 54 buildings with the Energy Star rating.
