Irvine-based Autobytel names most likely 'Cash for Clunkers' trade-ins

Ford, Chevy, Jeep, Dodge models top list.

Irvine-based Autobytel's Cash for Clunkers tool has named its list of older vehicles headed to the junkyard, and it's no surprise that SUVs and trucks under the Ford, Chevrolet, Jeep and Dodge brands all top the list.

The company's Cash for Clunkers tool provides an easy way for consumers to research whether their current auto qualifies as a trade-in under the government's Car Allowance Rebate System (CARS). It also offers a complete list of eligible new vehicles.

The site has met with much activity during the first month of its launch, according to Autobytel, as car shoppers eager for a deal use the program to evaluate their vehicles.

“All this activity is great news for the auto industry, our country's energy independence and for cash-strapped consumers – because for every clunker headed to the graveyard, there’s that big rebate toward a new, more fuel-efficient vehicle just waiting to be bought and driven off the lot,” says Tim Nelson, vice president of Web site operations for the company.

Analysts of the site's activity show that Detroit's Big Three lines encompass all the top 10 models up for trade. Among the other facts: Vehicles at least 10 years old are being researched the most, with "heavy evaluation" taking place on models from 1996-2001.

The top 10 models seeing the most activity on Autobytel's Cash for Clunkers site are:

1. Ford F-Series
2. Ford Explorer
3. Chevrolet C/K/Silverado
4. Jeep Grand Cherokee
5. Dodge Ram
6. Chevrolet Blazer
7. Jeep Cherokee
8. Dodge Grand Caravan
9. Dodge Dakota
10. Ford Ranger
