Irvine has been named among the country's Smarter Cities by the Natural Resources Defense Council in collaboration with National Geographic. The area was recognized for its environmental stewardship, sustainable growth and livability.

The city came in at No. 13 among 178 medium-sized cities – those with populations between 100,000 and 250,000 – surveyed by the agency. Irvine garnered high marks in the categories of standard of living, for its percentage of owner-occupied housing; green building, which includes plans to construct and revamp city-owned buildings to high energy-efficiency standards; transportation, for the city's bike and trail system, and public transit offerings; and recycling efforts.

“A smarter city is a green city, and I believe that this survey’s criterion fits well with Irvine’s mission – to be one of the nation’s great places to live, to work, and to thrive," says Irvine Mayor Sukhee Kang. "The survey defines the city of Irvine perfectly.”

But Irvine is not the only city that earned high marks: OC METRO reported Monday that Mission Viejo came in at No. 7 in the small cities – populations between 50,000 and 100,000 – category for its efforts.
