  • Irvine is the safest large city in America, according to data released today by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. This is the fifth year in a row that the city has earned the distinction.

The ranking is based on the Part I Violent Crimes rate in cities with a population of more than 100,000 reported to the FBI from January to December 2008. The data includes murder, rape, robbery and aggravated assault.

Irvine, which currently has a population of about 212,800, also experienced the lowest rate of violent crime in its 37-year history in 2008. The city continues to report less of this type of crime per capita than any other large city in America. Part I crime decreased by 10 percent in 2008, says the report.

“A safe community ranks at the top of the city’s priority list,” says Irvine Mayor Sukhee Kang. “There is nothing more important than preserving the safety and security of our community."
