Irvine-based Quantum Fuel Systems Technologies Worldwide has signed a $10.2 million agreement with Fisker Automotive, also in Irvine.

Quantum, a co-founder of the luxury green car manufacturer, will develop the Phase III stage for plug-in hybrid powertrains for Fisker.

The alternative energy company is working in conjunction with Fisker to launch its first premium hybrid, the $87,900 Karma sedan, next year.

Phase III will entail continued engineering development and completion of validation of the powertrain. It also calls for high altitude, durability, and hot and cold weather testing. The phase will lead to the start of production in 2010, according to Quantum.
