Passenger traffic was up at John Wayne Airport in October: The number increased 5.1 percent from the same time last year. A total of 769,373 travelers passed through the gates last month, compared to 731,985 in 2008.

It's the third straight month of increased passenger traffic, and the gain is great news for the airport, according to spokeswoman Jenny Wedge.

John Wayne also saw upticks in a number of other areas. Among them: Commercial carrier flight operations jumped nearly 5 percent, and total aircraft operations rose 7.4 percent compared to October 2008. There were 19,227 takeoffs and landings last month, up from 17,903.

General aviation activity, which accounted for about 60 percent of aircraft operations last month, spiked 11.1 percent from October 2008.

The only decline came in commuter carrier operations, which fell 13.4 percent.
