As part of its $1 million award to California nonprofits serving people with HIV and AIDS, Kaiser Permanente Orange County is giving five local agencies a total of $45,000 in grants.

In support of World Aids Day, which took place on Dec. 1, a total of 63 individual awards were made across the state for 2008. Some of the Orange County nonprofits that received grants were AIDS Services Foundation of Orange County, ACTION, AIDS Care Teams and Shanti Orange County. More than $300,000 was donated to 38 organizations in the Southern California region.

"We believe Kaiser Permanente Orange County plays an important role in helping to fund community organizations reaching out to those affected by HIV/AIDS," says Julie Miller-Phipps, senior vice president and executive director of the nonprofit medical center. "We share a strong partnership with these organizations to treat this disease, which goes beyond monetary grants."

The awards will be used to enhance and continue delivering services for those with AIDS, such as youth education, prevention, screening, treatment programs, housing and food pantries.
