Today’s grand opening party for the region’s newest children’s museum, Pretend City, drew about 300 invited guests, including Lakers basketball great Kobe Bryant and his family, who were handed keys to the city as colorful streamers and confetti fell from above.
The museum will open to the public on Sunday, however today’s celebration – which drew TV crews and media from Los Angeles and beyond – gave benefactors, elected officials, business leaders and other invited guests an opportunity to get an early peek at the result of what has been a 12-year effort to create an interactive learning environment for children.
The mission: To educate youngsters – from infants to 8 years old – about the workings and connectivity of a community. Among the attractions: a farm, a store, a construction site and a restaurant. And the museum is stocked with more than 200 uniforms – from lab coats to fireman’s uniforms.
