Gas prices cause a slight Labor Day travel dip

Though there has been some relief with the price of gas, travel is still expected to be below last year.

Ready to hit the road this holiday weekend? Some diehards still are, but the Automobile Club of Southern California estimates that Labor Day travel will be down in Southern California about 1.4 percent.

Gas prices will remain close to Memorial Day levels, when the price per gallon was hovering just below $4. This week, in most areas of Southern California, gas prices have again dropped below the $4 mark.

Hurricanes in the Gulf of Mexico and a precarious market may prove to make this relief short-lived.

More than 2.7 million southland residents are expected to travel this holiday weekend, which traditionally represents the end of summer. About 81 percent are expected to drive and another 374,000 are expected to fly. This is a 3.4 percent decrease from last year.

Other than trips to Las Vegas (which is the number one travel destination for Southland residents) most Southern California residents are expected to stay closer to home. The top five Labor Day travel destinations, according to a survey of AAA’s travel agents are: Las Vegas, San Diego, Central Coast, Baja Mexico cruises (departing from San Pedro) and Northern California (including San Francisco, Monterey, Napa Valley and Lake Tahoe).
