Local documentary debuts continued ...

The San Juan Capistrano Historical Society was extremely helpful and Gallison spent countless hours sifting through old documents, photos and newspaper clippings. The more of the farm’s history she uncovered, the more intriguing the story.

She interviewed Mary Cook Elliot, a descendant of the original owner and Rita Nieblas, who was born there in the early 1900s. Gallison also spoke to local citizens, such as Shig Kinoshita, former San Juan Capistrano citizen of the year and owner of the farm from the 1950s through the 1990s.

Former mayor Gary Hausdorfer relates the fact that the city of San Juan Capistrano became on the first city in the United States to purchase farmland to dedicate to agricultural use. San Juan Capistrano became one of the pioneering cities of agricultural preservation in the United States

“This documentary is a community effort and I’m so thrilled that the community will be able to view and enjoy the film,” says Gallison. “It is being screened at the San Juan Capistrano Community Center, which is located on part of the original farm acreage. What could be more special than that?”
