The Capital Grille

The power lunch returns, and now it’s fast and affordable.

By Susan BelknappPublished: February 01, 2012

Who says that since you’re not closing a multimillion-dollar deal over a three-hour power meeting you can’t take lunch at the prestigious Capital Grille at South Coast Plaza? This bastion of old-school luxury that is still new to O.C. is not only luscious and luxurious, it’s now fast and affordable.

The Capital Grille is now offering its exclusive Plates Menu, which lets guests order their choice of soup or salad, sandwich and side items – all for $18. Diners can choose from nine “plates,” selections that will vary with the seasons: three soups or salads, three sandwiches and three sides.

The winter menu includes a Wagyu cheeseburger with a fried egg and crisp onions, roasted pepper soup and roasted root vegetables. The aim is to ensure that guest enjoy this sumptuous lunch in 45 minutes.

I dined with a friend, and my combination was a cup of New England clam chowder, the Wagyu cheeseburger and truffle fries. It was indulgent – but worth it. My friend opted for lighter fare: a salad of mixed greens (she raved about the vinaigrette), the lobster roll (generous helpings of lobster and not too “mayonnaisey”) and roasted root vegetables.

The Wagyu burger was tender and rich – very tasty. It’s not too large, so you aren’t over-stuffed. The truffle fries are amazing but also rich, so you can appease your guilt by not eating every last one. Fresh strawberries made a perfect dessert.  thecapitalgrille.com
