Irvine-based Masimo receives FDA clearance for new respiratory device

The noninvasive respiration-rate monitoring apparatus uses acoustic technology.

Irvine-based Masimo, a global medical technology firm, recently received FDA clearance for its latest innovation, Masimo Rainbow SET Acoustic Monitoring.

The program provides noninvasive, accurate respiration-rate monitoring, which may also enable earlier detection of respiratory compromise or patient distress. Masimo also announced a limited market release of the new technology, which will begin in December.

The device features an adhesive sensor with an integrated acoustic transducer that rests comfortably on the patient’s neck and detects upper airway acoustic vibrations on the surface of the skin during the respiratory cycle.

Solving the “unsolvable” problems in health care is the key to advancing medicine and providing improved patient care, according to Joe E. Kiani, Masimo founder and CEO.

“Masimo Rainbow SET Acoustic Monitoring addresses a longstanding and growing need to accurately and easily monitor patient breathing, which is expected to improve patient safety and decrease the cost of care in hospitals,” he says. “It also adds another compelling reason for hospitals to choose the Masimo Rainbow SET upgradeable platform for pulse oximetry, Pulse CO-Oximetry, and now – Acoustic Monitoring."
