Newport Beach-based McCarthy Building Cos., a privately held construction company, has been honored with a 2012 Training Magazine Top 125 award. The company, which is one of the nation’s oldest and largest private construction firms, is entirely employee-owned.

Chairman and CEO Mike Bolen said being included among Training Top 125 companies for the second year is an outstanding honor for McCarthy. “As an employee-owned company, it is our responsibility to help one another achieve our greatest potential,” Bolen said. “And in our highly technical industry with little room for error, we know we must meet the highest standards in construction quality and safety. When each of our 1,400 owners focuses on small incremental improvements, the impact is very powerful. Our comprehensive approach to training and development is a key part of this process.”

Training Magazine presented the award at the Training 2012 Conference & Expo last week in Atlanta. The award honors companies with the best employer-sponsored training and development platforms. This is the second consecutive year that McCarthy has been included on the list; in 2011, it ranked 112th on the list, and this year’s placing rocketed the company up 102 spots to 10th place.

“The competition was fierce this year, and it was a very difficult task to choose the winners from the many excellent applications we received,” said Lorri Freifeld, editor-in-chief of Training magazine. “Congratulations to the 2012 winners, who demonstrated their unwavering commitment to, passion for, and investment in training.”

In addition to the firm’s unique ownership structure, McCarthy earned the recognition due to its training program, which was overhauled and relaunched in 2008. McCarthy Build U takes a one-on-one, individualized approach for each employee in terms of training and development. Employees are provided with an extensive opportunities and resources in the form of in-person, self-directed and Web-based training, which enables individuals to control and facilitate their own personal and professional development. The program is unique among training courses within the building industry, and among the best of its class outside of the industry.

McCarthy was founded nearly 150 years ago as a family-owned business, and now ranks as one of the largest employee-owned companies in the country today.
