Local hospital network earns prestigious workplace award

MemorialCare Health System is named a Gallup Great Workplace

Gallup, an international research and analytics organization, has granted MemorialCare Health System the 2012 Gallup Great Workplace Award. The health network is one of only 27 employers around the world to receive the designation of a Gallup Great Workplace.

Headquartered in Fountain Valley, MemorialCare is a not-for-profit network of hospitals, medical centers and clinics offering dozens of health services. The family of healthcare providers is the only 2012 honoree from California. MemorialCare prides itself on its use of evidence-based medicine and new technologies in healthcare services.

“Every one of our exceptional 11,000 plus employees, 2,500 affiliated physicians and countless volunteers contributed to this tremendous honor,” said Barry Arbuckle, president and CEO of MemorialCare Health System. “Their continuing commitment to our mission is why we are able to offer Southland communities extraordinary, high quality patient care.”

The Gallup Great Workplace Award is one of the most prestigious workplace recognitions among employers. The award recognizes a company’s exceptional commitment and ability to create a unique, positive culture among employees, and inspire employee commitment to their work.

Tom Roth, leader of Gallup’s Workplace and Leadership division, says that on a global scale, actively disengaged employees outnumber committed workers by more than two to one.

“The organizations honored work hard to shatter and reverse that trend, averaging nine engaged employees for every actively disengaged employee," Roth said. “Engaged employees are more productive, safer, more customer-centric and more successful. They are also 3.5 times more likely to be thriving in their overall lives, experience better days and have fewer unhealthy days.

Companies applying to be considered for the award are evaluated on a number of criteria, including the rate of response to the survey, evidence of engagement among employees and the perceivable impact of engagement on performance.

This year’s study received responses from 7.5 million employees in 177 countries; results are submitted to a database, and employers who exceed Gallup’s stringent criteria are asked to present their best practices and strategic plans.


“Awardees are improving lives as they better overall company performance. They have established a new global standard for engaging people,” Roth said. “When compared to millions of workgroups Gallup studied globally, awardees create an environment that values people. They go far beyond the norm to ensure each employee has an emotional connection to their company’s mission and growth.”

The MemorialCare Health System’s network is comprised of six hospitals throughout Southern California: Orange Coast Memorial Medical Center in Fountain Valley, Saddleback Memorial Medical Center in Laguna Hills and San Clemente, Long Beach Memorial Medical Center, Community Hospital Long Beach and Miller Children’s Hospital Long Beach. Several local retail clinics and ambulatory health services are also a part of the network, as well as the MemorialCare Medical Foundation physicians’ organization.
