Leslie Flores, a resident of Huntington Beach and teacher at Star View Elementary School in Midway, has received the 2009 Time Warner Cable National Teacher award. In addition to receiving a $2,000 cash grant and a $3,000 technology grant for her school, Flores will receive the award at a gala event June 3 in Washington, D.C.

All of the teacher honorees developed innovative classroom projects. Flores’ award-winning entry, “Journey to the Moon, Pathway to Discovery," teaches student’s about NASA’s early space missions. Programming from the Discovery Channel was fused with Internet technology and an innovative twist was added to catch the judges’ eyes.

“It’s very gratifying to see one of our local teachers get this national recognition,” says Stephen Pagano, executive vice president, Time Warner Cable. “This underscores the hard work, dedication and creative energy that takes place in our classrooms, and eventually, our entire community benefits from this effort.”
